Free shooters and snappers at Österlen

Historian Johanna Vadenbring gives the lecture "Little Mads and Captain Bendix – snipers and snappers in Österlen during the Scanian War"!

According to the legends, the Snapphans lived mostly in the old border area in the northeast. But some of the most famous representatives of the Danish king's free rangers actually came from the south rather than the north!

The most famous name from Österlen is Lille Mads, which probably came from Östra Hoby. But we also have Captain Bendix on Dälperöd who was a forest rider and recruited large troops of volunteers in, among other places, Östra Vemmerlöv.

An important Swedish name was the war commissar and snapper hunter Sven "Banketräya" Erlandsson, who was posted in Österlen for a long time - a position he would not have been given unless special forces were needed against the resistance men in the area!

But what was it that was fought over in the south-east? Were there particularly interesting combat targets in the area? In what follows, Johanna looks at how free shooters and snipers were organized in Österlen, and what strategic role they played there in the Scanian War (1675-79).

Afterwards we offer coffee and cake! Register by October 2 at the latest to glimmingehus@raa.se. The event is a collaboration between Glimmingehus, the Hembygdskretsen Tumathorp and the Association for Ancient Heritage and Homeland Conservation in Southeast Scania.
