About Magnus Bärtås

Magnus Bärtås was born in 1962 in Jönköping and is based in Stockholm. He is an artist, writer and head of research at Konstfack and works primarily with text and video. Bärtås's dissertation in artistic research, "You Told Me – Work stories and video essays", was presented in 2010 at the University of Gothenburg. The focus of the dissertation is the stories behind a work of art and the relationships between the narrator, the viewer, the images and the artist within the practice of the video essay.

Bärtås's work has been presented at film festivals and art institutions in Sweden and internationally. In 2016, Göteborgs Konsthall made a major presentation of Bärtås's artistry and in 2017 his film "The Strangest Stranger" was nominated for best Nordic documentary film at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen. He has also published several books, including "Alla monster måste dö" which he wrote together with Fredrik Ekman and which was nominated for the August Prize in 2011.
